How to Publicize Your Events

Casti CircleAs your school year gets underway, you have the opportunity to welcome new families into your community. Whether it’s an Admission Open House, Parent’s Night, the Fall Play or Homecoming, bringing families and alumni onto your campus is a wonderful way to strengthen that community. What do you need to prepare your website to make this information clearly available?

Identify a goal and an audience

Identify a goal for this event. Is it to get inquiries for the Admission Office? Is it to build relationships with alumni? Is it to make new students feel welcome?

Use your goal to set the tone for your messaging

Make sure you include a clear call to action and an easy way for your audience to respond.

Gather feedback

Try to look outside your own office for feedback; ideally, reach out to a few representatives of your target audience. For example, if you’re promoting an Alumni event, you can often find an alumnus working somewhere on a school campus to ask for their input.

Spread the word online

Activate the “Upcoming Events” panel on your homepage and include the event
Post announcements and reminders about the event to your social media feeds
Send an email to families inviting them to attend
Include any images you have that relate to the event, or simply showcase the community in an engaging format

Spread the word on campus:

Ask that the event be announced at a school assembly
Post to any online bulletin boards
Reach out to the department hosting the event to request full event details and any images from past events
Add dynamic content

You are building the branding for your school one step at a time. Every post, page and email is an opportunity to express the character of your school. This should not feel daunting but more inspiring that you will have many moments to convey the diverse aspects of your school.

Good luck and good messaging!
